Being a father of two very active kids, I get very little time to myself to play on my Xbox One. I find myself waking up at 6am on a Sunday morning and switching it on to grab a little gaming time, praying that Lily, my eldest daughter, doesn’t come down until at least 10am to participate in what she has affectionately named “Diablo Sunday”.
Sometimes she comes down at 7am… Sometimes not… But I still manage to get at least an hour or two a week playtime.
Since the release of Borderlands 2: The Handsome Collection, I’ve found myself playing nothing else. I was quite far into Dragons Age (though still to kill a dragon) when Borderlands turned up, but I popped it into the drive and haven’t stopped playing.
I’m not the type of gamer that plays a game on a normal level, then moves onto the next level to “test myself”, then move on to an even harder level to see how good I am, but with Borderlands 2 I find myself doing this.
I can’t explain the reason why. I did complete it and was around level 30, and I know that you could level up a character to level 72. I also knew that the weapons get better the higher level you get, but normally these things wouldn’t normally make me want to play the game again and again.
This is different.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve felt like throwing my controller at my TV numerous times whilst ploughing through True Vault Hunter Mode as, despite me now being level 43, I’m still struggling to kill some of the bigger bosses (Bloodwing being the most fucking frustrating thing I’ve encountered so far), but I know, whilst now starting the mission “Where Angels Fear To Tread”, that with just 5 chapters left to complete TVHM, I will start the game again and play it through on Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.
I’m that addicted to the game, I’m even putting off purchasing The Witcher 3 until I’ve gone through UVHM – another thing I don’t normally do (I’ve got a raft of uncompleted games sat on my desk because something I want always comes out a couple of weeks later).
And then, when I’ve completed UVHM with the Commando character Axton, there’s the chance to play through again with a Gunzerker, Assassin, Siren, Mechromancer and a bloody Psycho.
Don’t get me started on the Presequel…
