With 2014 now well underway, we’ll be entering the home stretch of Premier League play before we know it. And, naturally, that means the matches are starting to get more and more important. There’s a handful of teams at the top of the standings who seem poised to battle it out for the league title, which means we have a few matches in particular to look forward to in potentially determining the 2013-14 champion.
You can view the full remaining schedule at Fox Sports, but here are 10 remaining Premier League matches to mark on your calendar!
Manchester City vs. Chelsea (2/3), Etihad Stadium
Despite the fact that Arsenal continues to cling to its slim point lead atop the standings, sports betting site Betfair still lists Manchester City and Chelsea as the two teams with the best odds to win the Premier League. Man City is given 10/11 odds and Chelsea 5/2 odds. As of this writing, the two teams are separated by just a point in the standings. Naturally, that makes this upcoming match a very significant one for the standings.
Liverpool vs. Arsenal (2/8), Anfield
Liverpool may be behind Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City in the standings. But with 43 points through 22 matches, Liverpool is within striking distance if they can perform well against the “big three.” That makes this home match a huge opportunity.
Arsenal vs. Manchester United (2/12), Emirates Stadium
Man U has been horrifically disappointing this season. They are all but out of the race and already re-tooling for the future. But they’ll be playing for pride, and if there’s a statement match to be made it’s at Emirates Stadium in London. Arsenal will need to be careful here not to overlook a squad that still has talent.
Chelsea vs. Tottenham (3/8), Stamford Bridge
Tottenham is actually even with Liverpool with 43 points, and they too will be looking for a statement momentum win over a top team. It’ll be tough to grab such a win at Stamford Bridge, but this could be Tottenham’s last chance to really squeeze into the conversation.
Manchester United vs. Liverpool (3/15), Old Trafford
Same story as the February 12 match with Arsenal, except this time Man U is at home. Liverpool will need to be on top of their game.
Tottenham vs. Arsenal (3/15), White Hart Lane
Tottenham may effectively be out of the race by mid-March, but if they’re not, this will be an enormous chance for the Spurs. Their current betting odds of 66/1 indicate they’re not likely to win the League. However, they may yet have a chance, and this is still a match to watch.
Chelsea vs. Arsenal (3/22), Stamford Bridge
This is one to circle twice on your calendar. With just a few weeks remaining by this point, this match could go a long way toward determining the champion. In other words, make sure you’re watching this.
Arsenal vs. Manchester City (3/29), Emirates
The same situation as the previous match listed: this one could help to determine the eventual winner. Also, by this point in the season, every point will count dearly.
Liverpool vs. Manchester City (4/12), Anfield
It’s highly possible that Liverpool is out of the race by this point. However, at the same time, they’ll have the opportunity to pick up six precious points with two home games against top teams to close out the season.
Liverpool vs. Chelsea (4/26), Anfield
Again, should Liverpool stay in the race, this match could end up being extremely important heading into the final weeks.
There are plenty of other matches that will be worth watching in the coming months, especially because there’s always the chance that an out-of-contention team will unexpectedly knock off a top team. But looking forward, these 10 matches should have significant bearing on the eventual champion.
