Chelsea Football Club can hit her crest region of the jersey proudly as players that we have signed on a long lucrative contracts are won’t to do on the crest when they score a goal or lift a trophy.
The club has indeed risen from the near misses and wholesome gaffes in quest for elitism to being a recognised icon in the footballing world.
That Chelsea FC bought expensive and established stars and gave them even more expensive contracts is a stale story; but the ability to merge these individuals to a well-oiled and knit team was what was awesome.
That custom has continued and we are here now as a club competing for 4 trophies winable for all clubs in the UEFA places in the BPL. But a snag remained. A snag that hasn’t been addressed and doesn’t seem to be addressed in a while longer.
That snag is the position of a natural Defensive Midfielder aka Regista/Volante.
This is a position that have left the clubs in knots since the departure of Makele and the change of formation from the standard 4-3-3 to the many other exquisite formations the club has thus far employed.
Our ‘pretenders’ to this important position in modern footie are Lampard, Mikel, Ramires, Essien, Van Ginkel. Last season, Luiz and Ake joined the fray.
But none has ever encapsulated the nous of what a DM should be, and we have suffered for it.
None mentioned are comfortable to sit between the defence and forward players; nor has the ability to release balls to forwards quickly (taking out a player or two of the opposing team); nor assume the position of hard tackler aka ‘destroyer’.
Each has their unique variety of DM plays that has aided or abetted our win %, but none has assumed the role of the DM responsibly.
This has to cease as that role of DM is the most important in today’s modern game. It gives the team the required balance that can enable each players play to their strength. It makes attack tenacious and defending dogged. It is the heart beat of the team, and CFC sure needs that heart.
As the club progresses in the footie calender year, I for one expect our opponents to come prepared. We are still in contention for the FA cup; the Capital One cup; the BPL and the UCL trophies.
Retaining a midfield that opposing midfielders, no matter how ‘small’ their teams are (with all due respects) have a walk in the park in the centre circle would literally affect the confidence the squad needs to win trophies this season.
This should be addressed.
