Can you believe that its been twenty years since Soccer Saturday (albeit named something else right back at the beginning) hit our television screens with its current presenter Jeff Stelling! Took me by surprise too when I read the cover of the DVD with its tagline “The defining moments from 20 years of UNBELIEVABLE football punditry”.
For those that don’t know what Soccer Saturday is, its a TV show on Sky Sports shown on Saturday afternoons where a group of studio analysts gather together and have football bantz whilst watching the games for us and keeping us up to date any major incidents that happen during the games.
Former pundits on the show include the outspoken Rodney Marsh, Clive Allen, Frank McLintock and George Best (to name but a few) with current pundits Matt Le Tissier, Paul Merson, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas at the screens.
Having not seen Soccer Saturday for a while due to things beyond my control, the DVD was a great reminder of just how funny this show can be at times. Whether it be Jeff Stellings quick responses to the pundits mistakes, the mickey taking out of each other (though Phil Thompsons nose seems to get quite a bit of stick for some reason) or Chris Kamara not having a clue what he’s doing.
After Jeff has given a brief introduction to the panellists from over the years, the DVD then rolls through different aspects of the show, each with an introduction from Jeff.
Covering things like bloopers, referee bashing, the last game of the 2012 / 2013 season when Manchester City won the Premier League in the last minute of the game and of course, Soccer Saturdays Lionel Richie impersonator has his own little chapter, delighting us with his “UNBELIEVABLE” unbelievables, infectious laughter, brilliant one liners and his ability to not knowing what’s going on in games behind him despite him being there and watching.
You even get to revisit the period in time when Paul Merson was growing a dodgy moustache. He still looks as daft as I remember it.
To finish off the DVD, they’ve thrown in some Fergie time for you, including a bonus hour of extra stuff and exclusive never before seen footage. Particularly entertaining in this section is a part called “Rodneys Haircut” which chronicles Rodney Marshes comments about Bradford City and the subsequent fallout from it which ultimately leaves him with no hair.
My verdict: Worth a buy!
If your into football, or you know someone that is, then they’ve heard of Soccer Saturday. More so, with Christmas coming up, its a great little stocking filler. Pop this DVD in before the Queens speech and Christmas day will be full of little chuckles, some genuine laugh out loud moments and sheer awe at how Jeff Stelling seems to look younger now than he did 20 years ago before the boredom of some old woman rambling on your TV kicks in.
